I SUPPOSE that all surgeons will admit that an enlarged prostate of itself causes no harm, and often gives rise to no symptoms. Trouble and danger commence with the residual urine, which, if it increase, gives rise to retention, catheterism, and other serious consequences. The symptoms that are generally attributed to the enlarged prostate, such as frequency of micturition and so-called incontinence, are really due to the retained urine.
